Nigeria Votes: Will Buhari win a second term? | The Stream

Nigerians head to the polls on February 16 to vote for their next president. Incumbent Muhammadu Buhari faces more than 70 challengers – chief among them, former vice president Atiku Abubakar of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Buhari was elected to office in 2015, riding a wave of hope that he and his All Progressives Congress party (APC) could equalise Nigerian society and effectively fight the Boko Haram armed group. Millions of Nigerians, though, remain unemployed and Buhari has come under fire for suspending the country’s chief justice just three weeks ahead of the election – a move that prompted the PDP to halt its campaign for 72 hours in protest.

The Stream hosts a panel of Nigerian journalists to unpack the latest news about the election and examine the major issues affecting the campaigns.
